Free or Low-Cost Webinars for Caregivers of Veterans

Caring for a veteran is a profound act of love — and a uniquely demanding one. The men and women who served our countries often carry injuries both visible and invisible, from physical disabilities to PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and the challenges of aging. The family members who care for them, often called “hidden heroes,” shoulder enormous responsibility, frequently with little training and even less recognition.

The good news is that meaningful help is available, and much of it is free. Webinars, online workshops, and virtual training programs make expert guidance accessible from the comfort of home — no travel, no cost, and no need to leave your loved one’s side. Below is a roundup of trusted, free or low-cost online resources designed specifically for caregivers of veterans.

1. VA Caregiver Support Program (CSP)

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs runs a national Caregiver Support Program that should be every veteran caregiver’s first stop. Through its Program of General Caregiver Support Services (PGCSS), the VA offers free education, skills training, peer support mentoring, telephone support, and online programs for those caring for veterans enrolled in VA health care.

The program connects you with a local Caregiver Support Coordinator and a wealth of virtual resources. You can also reach the VA Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-260-3274, Monday through Friday, for guidance and referrals. Explore everything available at caregiver.va.gov.

2. Caregivers FIRST

Caregivers FIRST — short for “Caregivers Finding Important Resources, Support, and Training” — is a free, four-session group training program offered nationwide by local VA Caregiver Support Program teams. Depending on your location, sessions are held either virtually or in person.

The program helps caregivers build practical, hands-on skills while connecting with peers who understand the journey. Sessions cover topics like coping with difficult emotions, managing stress, and navigating sleep challenges, and every participant receives a workbook and supplemental materials to keep. It’s an excellent option for caregivers who want both education and community.

3. Building Better Caregivers (BBC)

Building Better Caregivers is a free, six-week online workshop developed for the VA specifically for those caring for veterans with dementia, memory problems, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, or other serious conditions. Rather than meeting at a set time, the workshop is self-paced — participants log in a few times a week, for a total of about two hours, at their own convenience.

Each small group is guided by trained facilitators, often fellow caregivers, and offers genuine peer support through online discussion. Graduates also gain access to an alumni community for ongoing connection. To qualify, you’ll need to be enrolled in a VA caregiver support program, and the veteran must be enrolled in VA health care. Learn more at va.buildingbettercaregivers.org.

4. REACH VA

REACH VA — Resources for Enhancing All Caregivers Health — offers personalized, one-on-one coaching at no cost. You’ll be paired with a coach who provides a workbook and works with you individually on the issues caregivers face most: stress management, problem-solving, self-care, and healthy habits.

Coaches also help with veteran-specific concerns, such as safety and managing behaviors linked to a diagnosis. For caregivers who prefer individual support over group settings, REACH VA is a flexible, supportive choice available through the VA Caregiver Support Program.

5. Elizabeth Dole Foundation & Hidden Heroes

The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is one of the leading organizations dedicated to military and veteran caregivers, and its Hidden Heroes campaign offers a rich library of free online education. The Foundation regularly hosts webinars — including its Spotlight Series and Caregiver Community Connection sessions — featuring experts from the VA, partner nonprofits, and the medical community on topics ranging from mental health to wellness and navigating benefits.

Beyond webinars, you’ll find a moderated online caregiver community, a step-by-step Caregiver Journey map, and a Resource Navigation program offering personalized, one-on-one help. Browse the free resources at hiddenheroes.org.

6. Military and Veteran Caregiver Network (MVCN)

Created for caregivers by caregivers and supported by the American Red Cross, the Military and Veteran Caregiver Network connects those caring for service members and veterans of all eras and relationships. The network’s focus is on reducing isolation while building connection, hope, and well-being.

MVCN offers free “Caregivers: Your Life and Your Health Matters” workshops, a custom online community packed with educational content, and both group and one-on-one peer mentoring rooted in evidence-based models. It’s a wonderful way to learn from others who have walked the same path. Find it through redcross.org.

A Note for Canadian Families

While many of the largest webinar programs are run through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Canadian families caring for a veteran shouldn’t feel left out. Veterans Affairs Canada offers caregiver support, benefits, and resources, and is the best starting point for learning what’s available north of the border. Visit veterans.gc.ca to explore programs and connect with support services in your area.
